Painting on Water – A mesmerising art of Ebru!

As colours create magic on paper, so can they on water! It’s true that painting on water creates wonders. An art form that is so appealing and yet unknown to many. I was amazed to see how it is done and I am pretty sure that you too will get shocked. Here, I am talking about a Turkish art of painting known as Ebru. This art is also known as Paper marbling and needs immense practice, skill and creativity.

In Ebru, a water bath is taken and various dyes are used to create a wonderful painting on its surface. Then a sheet of paper is used to cover the water and the painting is transferred on it. The process seems very simple when you hear it but it is the most challenging art I have ever seen. Marblers sometimes take a lifetime to learn this technique. Preparing the right composition of dye is an achievement in itself.

What I most loved about this art is the transformation of basic shapes into beautiful forms and textures; the fluidity of colours on water and how it was maintained on paper.

How gifted this earth is with artists all around us. We just need to learn to appreciate their talent.
